I have read my fair share of writing prompts and many of them just lead me to a dead end with no help of ending my writing fatigue. Most of them are boring, ordinary, and lead me to abandon the prompt after a few paragraphs. I wanted to see if I could come up with my own prompts. Maybe I will be better at creating prompts than following them.
Beware, the following can lead to stories, journal entries, daydreaming…
- Imagine a place of comfort. Why is it safe here? What do you observe with your senses? What colors are most prominent?
- Take a serious story you have heard/read/watched and turn it into a comedy.
- What is your dream weather to start a day? And to end with? What if you experienced every type of weather in the same day?
- Imagine you are a great painter. Write about a scene or person you would depict in your greatest work of art. What is their story? How did you first find out about them/it?
- You are stuck on an island. What do you do? Write in the style of a journal recounting your thoughts/actions or from a third person perspective. What was the biggest problem you faced? What was surprisingly easy? Over time, did it get easier or harder to sustain there?
- Wow, you are on the cover of a magazine! What is your cover story? Or, your pet is on the cover of a magazine. What did they do to make the cover?
- Life is underwater. We can breathe there. We live in houses there. We have gills. What is your underwater life like? Do you miss land life? Or, are you mad that underwater life did not begin sooner?
- Turn your anger into a person, item, or place. Describe it in detail. What place does it have in your life? Past, present and future?
- Choose a favorite joke and let it inspire a story or scene. Let the joke guide you.
- What is your favorite movie? Choose a character and write a letter from their perspective. What time period are they from? Are they writing to a friend, or an enemy? What if their letter got intercepted, is it in some kind of code?
If you use one of these prompts, let me know!
